That's about as definitive a list as you're likely to find Smile

I lot of hard rock/metal acts over the years have dabbled in Souhern Rock, much to the chagrin of their fans, although I always liked it (Warrant covered Train, Train; Poison did Poor Boy Blues; and of course, Metallica's experiments on Load.) James Hetfield's never been shy about wearing his love of Southern Rock on his sleeve.

The long guitar jams are probably the biggest common feature of the genre, so it's no surprise that guitar-based hard rock and heavy metal fans have a soft spot for these bands. And Marshall Tucker Band is one of only 3 bands I know to regularly use the flute in their sound (Jethro Tull and Traffic being the other two)

Other bands that don't feature the 5-minute-plus guitar solos, but still have a distinctively Southern US sound:

ZZ Top
Bad Company
Ozark Mountain Daredevils
Poco
Little River Band
Rossington-Collins (ex-Skynyrd)

Love Southern & heavy Southern Rock. For the 70's ZZ Top & Blackfoot our my faves, but there was offshoots like Little Feat, The Dixie Dregs & Les Dudek that mixed a myriad of styles. I also love all the above mentioned bands from the other posts.

Great southern rock from the 80's & 90's Raging Slab, Cry of Love, Supafuzz, Screaming Cheetah Wheelies, Brother Cane, Southern Gentlemen.

Clutch is mutant form of southern rock for the 2000's.

I wouldn't say that I miss it, mainly because all of the southern stuff that I like I can still listen to. I guess what I'm saying is, I'm not sure if the old sound would sound good today if there was a bunch of New bands doing new material that tried to capture the southern sound of the 70's and 80's.

Correct me if I'm wrong because maybe there are new bands out there doing just that and they're in the underground. Otherwise, I'm perfectly happy with the library of older material that I have now.

I know some of you will like to kill me but my fave BLACKFOOT albums are the ones with KEN HENSLEY, SIOGO and VERTICAL SMILES, more their HARD AOR days. Same with 38 SPECIAL. My fave album is STRENGTH IN NUMBERS. yeahh, will sound strange to some of you. I have mosf of their albums but their mid 80s days were bettter in my opinion. Never been a SOUTHERN rock fan, more a hard aor or melodic hard rock fan.

Nice to see all your responses. There was always a genuine kinship between a lot of these bands too.I also loved the great guitar jams these guys were noted for: Green Grass and High Tides(Outlaws),Free Bird(Skynyrd),Boogie No More(Molly Hatchet),Highway Song(Blackfoot),Another Man's Woman(ARS),Grey Ghost(Henry Paul Band) just to name a few.I don't know how I forgot these guys in my original post but Point Blank surely deserve a mention too.Their first 2 LPS can stand with the best of them.

Speaking of 90s southern rock, does anybody remember Copperhead? They put out one album in '92 which was pretty good. The first two songs, Busted and Whiskey, were in regular rotation on the radio.

YES!!! Whiskey! Everyone compared them to Skynyrd but I thought they sounded a little more like Blackfoot myself. The lead singer was a cross between Rickey Medlocke and Jesse Dupree of Jackyl.Another good band never to be heard from again.

Point Blank is a great band. "The Hard Way" is another great album of theirs.

You could also lump in Johnny Winter's early 70's work & his brother Edgar Winters Whitetrash.
